Migrating a WordPress blog to Google Blogger

leave a comment »

WordPress is such a lovely Blog System, but in case you wish to have a parallel blog on Google’s new Blogger, you might like to try out this free ruby program which can do the job in one stroke.

All you need to do is go to your WordPress dashboard, Export and export an RSS XML file.
wp2blogger.rb can convert the WP XML to wither Movable Type format or Google’s XML format (http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom). You may store these to disk and upload them through some other means (like blogger.sh) or through this program itself.

Google’s format does not take in comments and some other features that WP has, but your blog content, along with categories and publishing date will be posted correctly. Suggestions are welcome.
I have just successfully migrated this blog to google. One file failed an XHTML check, I corrected the offending line, and reposted the file using blogger.sh.
(Note: Currently categories do not show up on googles blog)

If you want help in deleting large numbers of entries from your Google Account, blogger.sh displays titles of 25 posts (at a time) and allows you to select multiple numbers and ranges.

Now if you really have something important to say, why not say it in multiple places. You can post your files over at Live Journal using LJPOST or LJRPC.
